Cosmetic surgery has become more and more popular in the UK due to cultural acceptance and easy availability. While most people who have sought cosmetic surgery had successful results, there have also been several stories, involving real people, who have suffered disappointments. For a majority of the patients, cosmetic surgery is a lifestyle option and they want to look more refreshed and as exuberant as they feel inside. With an increased life expectancy, the age at which people stay active and outgoing has reached early 70's. Under such circumstances, it is natural that many people, both women and men want to gain the looks, which go with their lifestyle.
In this article we contend that the most important element for achieving a successful outcome in cosmetic surgery is the patient education and choosing appropriate procedure. Sadly, in UK there continues to be a lack of any formal training in cosmetic surgery. Regulations to regulate private practice in cosmetic surgery place no emphases on formal training. The provision of cosmetic surgery is fragmented and in majority of the cases, there is lack of a general practitioners input. Various reasons for this include, lack of information materials for the GPs and a certain lack of interest on their part. Cosmetic surgery is different from other surgeries in three important respects.
First, it is performed mostly, on disease free tissues (I have deliberately not used the word normal).
Second, it is performed to satisfy certain expectations and personal desires.
Third, it is a surgery performed in a five dimensional framework, rather than the three dimensional framework of human body. |
