Our friends now call us Twin Peaks
Identical twins Jo and Kerry Burton work in sales and promotion. They live in Stevenage, Herts.
JO SAYS: When I first mentioned to Kerry that I was considering breast implants, she wasn't at all impressed. She'd been put off by a friend who ended up with something resembling two footballs stuck to her chest. But I was keen for her to join me. I argued that implants can look very natural and would vastly improve our figures.
In our teens we were both slim with a busty DD cleavage - although at the time we weren't happy about the rude comments this attracted from boys. Yet in our early 20's, our boobs shrank considerably for some reason, and we didn't like that either. It wasn't that we had problems with boyfriends or felt self-conscious, but we wanted to look our best to improve our career prospects. We want to move from working in promotions to modelling, and felt we were lacking in sex appeal up top.
The reason we wanted to stay so alike is that if one of us looks different to the other, we wouldn't be identical anymore. We love the fact that people can't tell us apart.
Last year I told Kerry I was going to have my boobs done whether she went ahead or not. That did the trick. Once I'd made the decision, she didn't want to be left out.
We saw three surgeons and we decided on Mr Aslam. He was friendly, genuinely interested in why we both wanted implants, and gave a thorough answer to every question we threw at him.
We made it clear that we both wanted to be the same size and though we were at odds whether to have D or DD (I wanted DD, Kerry didn't), Mr Aslam convinced us a D would be the best for our small frames.
On the day of the operations, Kerry went down to theatre first, because she was too nervous to hang around waiting. I went an hour later, when she was in the recovery room. We were both groggy afterwards and our chests felt tender, but we could both see - and feel - that our breasts were lovely and full. Although they were swollen to begin with, we could tell they would be exactly the right size. I kept saying to Kerry: 'See, they don't look like footballs!'
KERRY SAYS: Whatever my misgivings before the operation, I know I would have been envious if Jo had lovely full breasts and I was stuck with my small ones. I decided to overcome my fear because I knew how much Jo wanted bigger boobs, and there was no way I was going to be left out. She'd have received more admiring looks if she was bustier than me - and that would never do. Imagine how awful it would be if guys always wanted the twin with the bigger boobs.
The day after the surgery, my boobs felt as though they'd been run over by a truck. It was very painful to lie down, but it hurt more when I got up. Jo found it even tougher than I did. But after about a week, our breasts stopped hurting, and once the swelling had gone down - which took another two weeks - they looked great. Of course, as soon as our friends saw our new figures, they started teasing us. The guys couldn't resist calling us 'double top' and everyone else dubbed us 'twin peaks'.
I never felt that Jo had coerced me into something I hadn't wanted to do, because I knew that my figure would look so much better with bigger breasts. It does - and so does hers.
